How we keep your information safe

Your personal information is protected by law. These laws include:

  • the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act)
  • the Australian Privacy Principles.

You can read more about how we keep your information safe in our privacy policy.

How we collect your information

We will collect your information when you share your response. We will collect your information through Citizen Space. Citizen Space is an online tool we use when we want to find out what the public thinks.

What happens if you agree to us collecting your information?

If you agree to us collecting your information, we may share part or all of your response on our website. If we share your response, we may say that you wrote it. But this only happens if you agree for us to include your name on your response.

You can choose whether you share your name and email address with us.

We won’t share:

  • your email address
  • content that is insulting or rude.

We will share your response with another organisation that is helping the Department with the consultation.

What happens if we put your response on our website?

The general public can read any response on our website. This includes people who live overseas.

Usually if we share personal information with someone overseas, we have to make sure that person follows our law about personal information. The law we have to make sure they follow is Australian Privacy Principle 8.1.

But if you agree that we can share your response, this law won’t apply. This means that we won’t be responsible if someone overseas uses or shares the information in your response. Your response won’t be protected by the Privacy Act. And you won’t be able to use the law to ask for compensation.

Information about someone else in your response

You shouldn’t include information about someone else in your response if:

  • you include their name
  • you can tell who the person is.

If you need to include information about someone else in your response, you need to:

  • tell them about the information on this page
  • make sure they agree to us collecting their personal information.
