As retailers of tobacco products and as associations involved in the representation of those retailers, it is not unexpected that we are party to trade relations between tobacco manufacturers, ourselves and our members including sponsorships of trade information and education. The sale of tobacco products involves considerable regulatory changes, broader industry issues such as the illicit trade in tobacco and growing retail security risks. Retailers need to remain informed and it is an industry bodies role to keep them informed, which includes maintaining relationships with appropriate government contacts, regulators and all suppliers to our industry.
The protection of government policy from commercial and vested interests is an aim that most certainly shouldn’t be restricted to tobacco control and health policy. It is an important tenant of all government policy making. As such, policy makers who are sophisticated operators, should make all efforts to not unnecessarily exclude the views of legitimate stakeholders, and they should very transparently consider the views of all impacted parties through sensible and considered interactions.
Any suggestion that the views of retailers are industry interference is incongruous and is an irrationally narrow interpretation of obligations that do not actually restrict these interactions. Governments and policy makers should form their conclusions based on all available stakeholder views.
