I completely agree there should be more support for parents of stillborn babies as well as more research to reduce numbers. However babies born under 20 weeks must also be considered. They must not fall into the category of a miscarriage. Gestational weeks should not define how a parents loss can be recognised. A baby born under 20 weeks must be treated the same as any other stillborn.

The Sunshine Coast University hospital has a great process for mothers to birth stillborn babies. The midwives themselves have lost their babies which allows them to relate to the parents in a way others cannot. However again babies born under 20 weeks need to be classed as a stillborn. A mother still endures the labour and birth and therefore the baby should be recognised.

Plan is good as much more mental care is needed for women following a stillbirth.

Again please consider including babies born under 20 weeks to ensure the accuracy of stillborn data. An autopsy can still be carried out on babies born under 20 weeks so their data could be useful to assist in reducing rates of stillbirths.
