Questions about how service provider performance is assessed against the aged care draft standards
11. What are the features of the existing assessment and monitoring process that need to be changed?
Existing features that need to be changed
Unannounced support contacts. I believe that the industry has come far enough that this is no longer a necessity. A 24 or 48 hours notice period would be sufficient. Desktop audits could be also done for better performing facilities.
The disparity between auditors and their interpretation and at times, their decision making based on their own values as opposed to evidence based practice. This has improved but there is still much work to be done.

Reasons for preferred option
A single approach would allow for better resource allocation for the Agency and service providers alike.
I expect that this will be easier for residential services to adopt as they are far more used to the process. Other aged care services would get used to it soon enough - the proposed changes also make the accreditation process more equitable.
Benchmarking within larger organisations would also be more easily achieved if compliance is sought through one process.

14. Will your preferred option/s maintain appropriate safeguards for consumers? Please explain your answer.
Text box appropriate safeguards for consumers
Yes. Consumers and their families want a nice warm bed, friendly staff and a facility that cares about them, not just for them. I believe that the proposed process will ensure that. I believe the easiest and best way for consumer satisfaction measurement is that all facilities must commit (perhaps as mandatory) to validated consumer satisfaction measurement tools. This would give the agency and providers meaningful data in terms of consumer engagement.
15. Will your preferred option/s decrease the regulatory burden on aged care organisations? Please explain your answer.
Regulatory burden textbox
It streamlines the process for all sectors.
