National Immunisation Education Framework for Health Professionals
Overview
Preamble
The National Immunisation Committee (NIC) Immunisation Provider Competency Working Group (IPCWG) has undertaken a review of the 2001 National Guidelines for Immunisation Education for Registered Nurses and Midwives (the National Guidelines) to develop the draft National Immunisation Education Framework for Health Professionals (the draft Framework). The purpose of this review was to improve national consistency in core standards for practice and training and assessment for immunisation providers.
The draft Framework sets out the standards for practice for independent immunisers. It can be used as a resource by those involved in immunisation program management and education to assist with the planning and implementation of immunisation education for eligible health professionals at undergraduate or post-graduate level, or through in-service modes of education.
Reviewing and updating competencies for immunisation providers is a key action under Strategic Priority 7 of the National Immunisation Strategy for Australia 2013-2018: Ensure an adequately skilled immunisation workforce through promoting effective training for immunisation providers.
The draft Framework is available to download from the link below:

The draft Framework has been approved by the NIC and the Jurisdictional Immunisation Coordinators (JIC). The Department is now seeking additional comments on the draft Framework from immunisation providers, educators and other health professionals involved in immunisation. The feedback received through this consultation process will help to inform the final Framework, which will be published on the Department of Health website in the coming months.
