Opened 11 May 2020

Overview

Following the Commonwealth Government’s response to the Wood Review, the Sports Integrity Taskforce, located within the Department of Health,  was charged with developing a sports wagering regulatory response to safeguard the integrity of Australian sport, in the form of an Australian Sports Wagering Scheme (ASWS).

This Discussion Paper aims to provide a starting point for a collaborative process to developing the options for the ASWS to be assessed in the Regulatory Impact Statement. This Discussion Paper includes a series of questions we are seeking feedback on.

The remaining sections of this discussion paper set outs the following:

  • Section 2 sets out the base case, which is the current state of sports wagering services
  • Section 3 discusses the problems associated with regulating sports wagering services
  • Section 4 outlines options for the ASWS
  • Section 5 outlines the benefits being sought by the ASWS
  • Section 6 identifies next steps
  • Appendix A provides a more detailed discussion of current state and territory regulation of sports wagering.
