MBS Health Assessment Items Review Consultation Survey

Closed 30 Sep 2024

Opened 22 Jul 2024

Overview

Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) health assessment items support general practitioners and prescribed medical practitioners working in general practice to deliver a comprehensive evaluation of a patient’s health and wellbeing, and consider whether preventative care and education may be of benefit to the patient.

In line with recommendations by the MBS Review Taskforce in 2020, the Department of Health and Aged Care (the department) commenced a review of all MBS health assessment services to review the evidence base of these services and assess their conformity to contemporary clinical guidelines. This has included a systematic literature review on the efficacy and effectiveness of health assessment services within primary care, and an analysis of MBS uptake and utilisation data for the items.

The department has now commenced its consultation phase of the review, and is seeking industry member and consumer feedback on the items.

Why your views matter

Online survey or Written Submission

The health assessment review is an open consultation and allows all to participate and provide their feedback through either the consultation survey or written submission.

Participants are requested to refer to the attached discussion paper prior to making a submission or completing the survey. The discussion paper summarises findings from the literature review and explores health assessment uptake and utilisation trends.

Feedback from the consultation process will assist in the department’s advice to the Minister of Health and Aged Care on the future of these items. Any changes to the items will require consideration through Budget processes.

Written submissions

Participants may choose to submit a written submission by emailing MBSHealthAssessmentReview@health.gov.au. Written submissions are due by COB 30 September 2024.

Participants are not expected to provide responses to both the online consultation survey and written feedback.

Written feedback submissions may be published by the department. Full details on privacy and publishing information can be found on the 'Important Information' page by clicking the survey link.

If you do not wish for all or some of your written submission to be published by the department, please advise the department of this within the submission.
