Nurse Practitioner 10 Year Plan Survey

Overview

The Department of Health is developing a 10 year plan for nurse practitioners. The purpose of the Nurse Practitioner 10 Year Plan is to describe a set of actions that can be taken to address nurse practitioner workforce issues of national significance and enhance the delivery of nursing care to the Australian community. The Plan will include 1 to 3 year, 5 year and 10 year goals. Development of the Nurse Practitioner 10 Year Plan will occur concurrently with development of the National Nursing Strategy, due to the role nurse practitioners play in broader nursing career pathways and health care outcomes for patients.

Context  

The consultation paper and one page summary attached below have been developed with background information about nurse practitioners in Australia and to highlight some of the issues that have been raised by stakeholders to date.

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with the experience, expertise and authority to diagnose and treat people of all ages with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions. Why your views matter

The Government wants to hear from people and organisations with an interest in nurse practitioners and the role they play in our health and aged care systems. We are seeking views on the issues which may have an impact on the delivery of care by nurse practitioners and want to hear suggestions on innovations to enhance the delivery of care.  The diverse perspectives, experience and knowledge of all stakeholders and interested members of the community are valued.

We have developed two surveys:

• A long-form survey. This is a detailed survey, which takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. It is most relevant for those who have specific ideas and strategies for inclusion in the Nurse Practitioner 10 Year Plan.
• A shorter survey for those who may or may not have experience in receiving care from a nurse practitioner and have ideas to share. This survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
