Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard - Public Consultation Survey

Closed 5 Aug 2016

Opened 7 Jul 2016

Overview

The Australian Commission on Safety & Quality in Health Care (the Commission) is seeking feedback on the draft Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard.

Clinical Care Standards aim to support the delivery of appropriate evidence-based clinical care, and promote shared decision making between patients, carers and clinicians.

A Clinical Care Standard is a small number of quality statements that describe the clinical care that a patient should be offered for a specific clinical condition. It differs from a clinical practice guideline; rather than describing all the components of care for managing a clinical condition, a Clinical Care Standard addresses priority areas for improvement.

Each Clinical Care Standard intends to support:

  • people to know what care should be offered by the healthcare system, and to make informed treatment decisions in partnership with their clinician
  • clinicians to make decisions about appropriate care
  • health services to examine the performance of their organisation and make improvements in the care they provide.

This Clinical Care Standard was developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) in collaboration with consumers, clinicians, researchers and health organisations. It complements existing efforts that support osteoarthritis care, and state and territory-based initiatives.

Why we are consulting

The consultation process aims to:

  • determine if the Clinical Care Standard is targeted appropriately to make the greatest positive difference to routine patient care and outcomes.
  • determine if the Clinical Care Standard identifies the key components of care a person should be offered for a specific clinical condition, or defined part of a patient journey.
  • determine if each quality statement clearly describes the care a person should be offered.
  • determine if the proposed indicators are suitable to assist health services to monitor local progress in meeting the Clinical Care Standard.
  • identify strategies that can support the sharing and local implementation of the Clinical Care Standard (e.g. tools, resources, processes and strategies).

The results of this consultation process will be used to further refine and develop the Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard. Feedback will also help to identify existing tools, and where necessary develop additional tools and resources for the implementation of the Clinical Care Standard.
